How Does a Swimming Pool Work?
Ever wondered how a swimming pool works? Let’s dive in and explore the essential parts that keep your pool water clean and inviting. No matter the type of pool you have, the water flows in the same way. So, let’s break it down step by step!
SUCTION / COLLECTION SIDE
This is where it all begins—the water is drawn from the pool and introduced to the filtration system.
Skimmer: The first line of defense against debris. Each skimmer has a basket that catches larger debris like leaves, ensuring proper water flow.
Main Drains: These are located at the bottom of the pool, drawing water into the pump.
Suction Lines and Valves: PVC pipes carry the water into the filtration system. The valves control water flow and can temporarily stop it when maintenance is needed. Common types include shut-off valves and three-way valves (also known as multidirectional valves).
FILTRATION SYSTEM / TREATMENT SIDE
Once water is pulled from the pool, it passes through the pump and into the filter to be cleaned.
Swimming Pool Pump: The heart of the circulation system, the pump contains an impeller that spins rapidly, creating a vacuum that pulls water through the skimmers and main drains into the filtration system.
Swimming Pool Filter: After leaving the pump, the water enters the filter, where contaminants are removed. There are three types of filters: Sand, Diatomaceous Earth (DE), and Cartridge Filters. Each filter type is equipped with either a multiport valve or a push-pull valve:
- Multiport Valves: These allow you to direct the water flow through the filter or bypass it.
- Push-pull Valves: Commonly found in DE filters, these valves have two settings—Filter or Backwash. They either send the water back to the pool or out through the waste port for cleaning.
RETURN / PRESSURE SIDE
After being filtered, the clean water is pushed back into the pool.
Return Lines: These PVC pipes carry the filtered water from the filter to the return jets.
Return Inlet: The return inlets circulate the filtered water back into the pool, ensuring even distribution and helping maintain water quality.
